Pretty book, but if you are looking for depth you will be disappointed.
By Concerned Consumer
I have a love/hate relationship with this book. Batman is the only hero I can afford to follow at this time, so I'm very selective in my purchases. As such, although I like the book and actually do recommend it, I'm not sure yet if I really think I got my money's worth.
PROS: If you are a comic collector and need just one book on Batman's history, then this is the book to get because it is very attractive and the most up-to-date (to early 2014). Every 2 pages covers one year in Batman's history (1939-early 2014), depicting not only events from Detective Comics and Batman Comics, but other related issues as well, such as World's Finest, JLA, and any other title with an important connection Batman's history. It's full of colorful pictures and past book covers throughout, and can give you some leads on past issues you might want to collect. It's also a great coffee table book if want to stimulate conversation with fellow comic book readers.
CONS: It is only about the comic history of Batman. TV and film is barely covered, so it's not a completely told history of Batman in popular culture. It's an extremely concise guide to key events in the comic book history of Batman in a VERY BRIEF but unfulfilling way. If you desire depth and want to know details of the Batman universe and creative history (like why certain artists/writers are important), then this is not the book you want. Why? Imagine telling the first 75 years of Batman in a Powerpoint presentation. That is this book. It's a bit of a tease, almost like smelling a tasty dessert but not getting a satisfying bite of it. For example, you might get a sentence saying that So-and-So began writing Batman with issue # whatever, but the authors fail to tell you why that person is good or bad or how they relate to Batman's history. Moreover, a lot of minor characters are mentioned in a way that exaggerates their importance, while (in my opinion) more important events/storylines are ignored. If you are hardcore and want more than a few bullet points, look elsewhere. This will leave you disappointed.
For hardcore Batman fans I recommend this book along with Essential Batman Encyclopedia (current thru 2008), and the Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes: Batman - Vol 1 (current thru early 1970s). The latter is the most detailed account of characters, locations, tech, etc (along with issue dates & numbers) ever written, and despite being 40 years out of date is still one of the best collecting resources out there. If you buy all three you then you have the best sources for Batman comic collecting through late 2014.

~What a HIStory this is.....WOW.~

Bat Fans, you most definitely HAVE to add this one to your collection, or like myself, buy it so you can start one. I own an abundance of the comics, but after reading this, I realized I am not as schooled on Batman as I thought. Not that I know it all, but considering just how much information is presented here, it is both awesome while leaving you awestruck. From 1939 to 2014, the information is quite detailed and it is fascinating to understand how, from small beginnings as a comic strip originally entitled Bat-Man, the removal of the hyphen would signal a change that Batman would never be the same. This book is big, really big, and gives us something I did not expect. Here on Amazon, the images shown to be the front and back of the book actually are not images for the book, rather the large case that holds the book. The two combined bring a weight a little over 6 pounds, so know you will not get through this read quickly, and neither should you want to do so. The artwork of Jason Fabok is stellar, as always, and the exclusive prints are illustrated by him, as well. The first print is the actual cover to the book, and the second shows the case images as a solid piece, with 4 snapshots of a young Bruce Wayne after his parents were killed, Joker, Batman & Catwoman, and Apokolips battling Batman. Perhaps the only gripe about this visual history is the size of the font when reading the caption of the comic books listed about Batman's history. Maybe making the book a half inch taller would have benefited those of us may not wear glasses, but can struggle at times with fonts this size. The binding is tight, and gives just enough to allow for page turning that should not weaken the spine of the book. 75 years, that's a lot to cover on any topic, but if you are reading this, then you have surely determined Batman is well worth it. I encourage you to stop waiting & start paying. 5 stars. No diggity, no doubt.

A must have for anyone who has read a batman comic
By Adam Kirshner
This is the best batman encyclopedia ever! As a huge fan of batman my whole life I've never seen a book with so much information! The only way a book could be any more in depth would be if they literally went issue by issue.
