General Chemistry: Atoms First , Second Edition starts from the building blocks of chemistry, the atom, allowing the authors to tell a cohesive story that progresses logically through molecules and compounds to help students intuitively follow complex concepts more logically. This unified thread of ideas helps students build a better foundation and ultimately gain a deeper understanding of chemical concepts. Students can more easily understand the microscopic-to-macroscopic connections between unobservable atoms and the observable behavior of matter in daily life, and are brought immediately into real chemistry–instead of being forced to memorize facts.
Reflecting a true atoms first perspective, the Second Edition features experienced atoms-first authors, incorporates recommendations from a panel of atoms-first experts, and follows historical beliefs in teaching chemistry concepts based and real experimental data first. This approach distinguishes this text in the market based whereby other authors teach theory first, followed by experimental data.

Emblematic of why most science textbooks suck
By Ahimsa Faraday
This book demonstrates very well why most science textbooks suck. It's a horridly overpriced paperweight written for those already familiar with the subject. It does not break down concepts and explain them in a way that students who are learning the subject require. This was my assigned textbook for General Chem and I ended up searching online for free resources to actually learn (Khan Academy, IsaacsChem, etc) as did my fellow students in the class. I did not talk to one student in my class who learned from this textbook. The online Mastering Chemistry bundled with this was awful as well. Buggy and often times won't count correct answers as correct.

Stole my money fair and square.
By feedback person
It was required for class, and it did the job. I hate paying such artificial prices for textbooks. They are only so expensive because the publishing companies know they can get away with it without anyone causing a fuss. New book versions are just copied information jumbled from the previous years book. It is criminal what they do to us. LET'S FIGHT BACK, sign petitions, call your representatives. This is not right!!!

DON'T BUY FOR WEB ENHANCED CLASS!!!!
By L. Winter
CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR SCHOOL SELLS IT TOO!
I rented this book even though the ISBN number wasn't spot on. I knew this was the correct book.
Problem was, the version my school bookstore was selling had a different cover. No problem, right? IT WAS A WEB ENHANCED CLASS! I had to pay $66 for the online registration at MasteryingChemisty.com (run by the damn company that makes the book I might add).
If I had bought it from the school bookstore, it would have come with a two year free membership. No problem for me really since I save about $5. However, I only had to take 1 of the 3 quarters for this book's class sequence. If you have to take all of them, just buy that damn thing. DON'T RENT!
