The world's most powerful newspaper barons - which of them will triumph? At first glance, Richard Armstrong and Keith Townsend seemed to have little in common. One was the son of an illiterate peasant, who emerged from the most backward corner of a Europe ravaged by a bitter war. The other was raised in a mansion on the far side of the world while the war was just another piece of news. One was a hustler, a thief, ready to change even his identity, if it would gain him a momentary advantage. The other was the scion of a well-known family, groomed for a public role, a rebel who didn't care if anyone approved of what he got up to. One craved wealth, recognition, status. The other quickly discovered that real power comes from anonymity. But they did have one thing in common. Both of them were gamblers. Both were prepared to risk everything in their battle to control the biggest newspaper empire in the world.

another triumph
By Anthony Spawton
The behaviour of the newpaper press is under the microscope. The characters are easily identified and I think with current events in the UK and Australia a sequel, this time form the point of view of rhe damaged or the politicians that owe their votes to a cosy relationship with the press.

The Rise and Demise of Armstrong (Maxwell)
By Dr. C.K. Yeung
It is a great read as usual from Mr Archer! The story is almost like reading a pseudo-history/biography of Robert Ian Maxwell, who died in 1991 at sea. Just as Captain Richard Armstrong in the book, Robert Maxwell had also won an MC and had risen to the rank of Captain in WWII. In fact Jeffrey Archer even used his original surname 'Hoch' in the book.
Yes....the format is like Kane and Abel, As the Crow Flies - when two people compete against each other and how one can make it big even with a poor upbringing can become successful in the end.
Some may say they are just the same, but I say the important thing is about how a story is told. And, Archer is the grand master when it comes to storytelling.

Fast Moving Media Story
By Alistair Young
A fast moving tale impressively researched. However at the risk of being picky or pedantic I don't think that Townsend would have been able to 'grab a hamburger from a cafe' in Adelaide just after the Second World War as they were unheard of in Australia then. He would have been more likely to get a 'floater' which was a meat pie floating in very thick pea soup.
