About the Author
Joel Watson is Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego. He received his BA from UCSD and his PhD from Stanford. Witty and clear

As far as economics textbooks go, this one is very readable. Its treatment of the subject is clear and reasonably rigorous on the undergraduate level. The author is also quite witty.

Disappointing

I bought this book because it was the required text for the Open Yale Course on Game Theory. I did not think it was well written and is not easy to follow. Chapter 3's Terminology and Notation section is especially bad. The organization of the book's chapters don't seem to have any rhyme or reason, with some chapters being only two pages long. This came as a surprise to me after reading the reviews for this book. There are no answers in the book for the exercises so you can't be sure if you have correctly understood the lesson. They said that guided exercises were added, but they are really part of the lesson and there is no way you can practice or test yourself with the single guided exercise. What is most glaring is that the book doesn't even mention Evolutionary Stable Strategies. How can a text on Strategy ignore that completely? The only saving grace is that the examples are more realistic than the Open Yale Course, but who cares as long as you learn the lesson. I would not have bought the book and would have stuck with the Open Yale videos alone if I had known.

Great and easy to follow

I found this book well worth my money. It's quite accessible and has great examples. I like the guided problem sets. I just wish the exercises had an answer key. They're great practice.

Absolutely ridiculous!!

If I had known there was another book in this series I would have never read it. Each Of the books are actually chapters and for the life of me I do not understand the purpose. Quantity is not more important than quality and some of the content is just disgusting. What woman goes into a public bathroom and allows one to release himself in her mouth. Cullen was a horrible person although the the author never got to the dark side of his personality, even after seven books, no chapters! REALLY, THESE CHAPTERS DO NOT DESERVE ANY STARS BUT I COULD NOT SUBMIT WITHOUT GIVING IT SOMETHING.

I will admit that I like the mystery but I can't keep up. I read too much to remember all of these bits and pieces. I really don't like BDSM and I'm finding it hard to like either one of these characters. Ivy slowed a hint of backbone for a brief second and then gave in again. I will hold out for one more to see if she will grow a spine and stand up for herself because right now she is pathetic. I can't stand a weak woman and she had turned stupid and weak. He is mean and hopefully will start showing something endearing about himself or I am done with this.

Wowza! Commit is the seventh book in Kelly Favor's riveting new serial, The Billionaire's Rules and it totally rocks! This is my very first time reading Favor's work but I must say, I am impressed with what I've read so far. This is a serial folks so there will be multiple installments and dare I say it, cliffhangers. Yikes! Each installment is relatively short which makes them perfect for a quick break or lunchtime read. The journey begins with Ivy Spellman, a recent college graduate who has been hired as a data entry temp by Biomatrix Pharma, one of the largest and most prestigious drug companies in Boston. Out of her group, she has been singled out by the handsome CEO of the company, Cullen Sharpe who has for no apparent reason chosen her to bring him his coffee. Ivy had always been the shy, quiet, mousy student who always sat in front, kept her head down, took meticulous notes and got good grades. She has just recently finished school and has no real job experience other than working as a part time grocery clerk so this is her first real job. She has no idea why Mr. Sharpe has taken an unusual interest in her but she only hopes that it doesn't lead to her termination. It certainly couldn't be because of her good looks because she would never be beautiful enough to attract the attention of someone like handsome, wealthy Cullen Sharpe. Even her manager, Emma Marks, seems to immediately dislike her. What the heck? After Ivy spills a cup of scalding hot coffee in Mr Sharpe's lap, she is called to his office to discuss her failure of his assigned task and to Ivy's surprise, he offers her tutelage in the form of.......discipline. What? Mr Sharpe presents Ivy with a choice but what will she decide??? She decides to leave his office but immediately regrets her decision. Ivy's indecision and inexperience torment her as she tries to resume her work. She is invited to a nearby bar for a drink after work with Lucas and several other coworkers. There is an altercation at the bar involving a very tipsy Ivy and a group of very obnoxious male patrons. The only friend she seems to have among her co-workers is Lucas who unsuccessfully tries to rescue her from their unwelcome advances. But just who arrives in time to come to Ivy's rescue? Why, handsome, hunky Cullen Sharpe, of course! Apparently, the mysterious Mr. Sharpe is very attracted to lovely, young, inexperienced Ivy and wants to do more than just discipline her at work. He spirits her away to his apartment where he rejects her after learning she is a virgin. What the heck? Ivy leaves and is more determined than ever to stay away from the fickle Mr Sharpe but can he stay away from Ivy? Apparently not! He insists that she attend a company luncheon at a nearby venue where she quite literally bumps into Xavier Montrose, President of Vellum Pharmaceuticals, a direct competitor of her boss' company, Biomatrix. And Xavier asks her for a date! Oh my! Cullen Sharpe witnesses the exchange and is literally livid. Oh my glory! Cullen Sharpe may not want her but apparently he doesn't want anyone else to have Ivy either? What is wrong with that man? What will Ivy do? Will she defy her Boss, otherwise known as Sir as he's asked to be called, and accept a date with Xavier? I think not, at least not yet. Cullen Sharpe doesn't give her a chance. It looks as if the enigmatic Mr Sharpe can't stay away from Ivy and this time, he does the deed. That's right, Ivy is no longer a virgin! She spends the night with Cullen but when morning comes, he's back to his same old cruel, arrogant self telling her that she should stay away from her. What is this guy's problem? But when Xavier is waiting outside the Biomatrix building for Ivy the next day and whisks her away for lunch, Cullen is absolutely livid. He marches into the restaurant and demands that Ivy leave immediately. And now, he showing up at Ivy's apartment in the middle of the night - uninvited! Oh my glory! Poor Ivy will soon be suffering from whiplash as a result of Cullen's mood swings and his off and on again behavior. He wants her, he doesn't want her, he wants her! But she can't turn him away! She's already in too deep! And I do mean emotionally and legally! OMG! Why is Xavier Montrose so interested in Ivy and just what is he up to??? Is the email he sent Ivy real and why did he send it? Hmmm...... And what exactly was Lucas doing in Emma Mark's office at her computer and why is he watching Ivy so closely??? After Ivy finally confronts Lucas for reading her email, Lucas delivers an unbelievable confession and a terrifying ultimatum to Ivey but is Lucas Hogan truly a FBI special agent and if so, why is he investigating Cullen Sharpe? Could there be a little corporate espionage happening at Biomatrix or murder? The truths, lies, consequences and threats are slowly taking an emotional and physical toll on Ivy. Ivy is threatened after someone sends her pictures of she and Cullen making love. The turmoil is too great and Ivy collapses while with Cullen. He takes her to his home to care for her but will Ivy finally reveal the truth to Cullen? Ivy may be in danger and Cullen claims he has a way to protect her from everything. Can Cullen truly protect her? And what will Ivy decide? I wonder??? Truths are told! Secrets are revealed! Lies are exposed! Oh My! But did Cullen reveal everything??? I think not! No spoilers from me but I will say this..... Super sexy dominant boss who may have control issues and-check! Handsome charismatic competitor who seeks revenge-check! Beautiful, shy virgin who discovers that she loves to submit-check! Office politics, drama, secrets, domination, consequences, punishment, blackmail, possible corporate espionage, a claimed FBI investigation and maybe even murder-check! A private jet and a quick but very eventful trip to Vegas-check! Heated attraction, sexy seduction, fiery passion, steamy sex and agonizing angst-you bet! Oh my God! One of Sartre's best

Sartre writes about his very early life. He writes about things that as an adult you aren't even conscious of anymore. How reading a book about horses and armies can bring those things to life. Sartre talks about his grandfather, his mother, his absent father. He is pretty dispassionate about them. The main thing about the book is Sartres' keen observation and reckless honesty. In the usual autobiography you get alot of bluster, the secret to my success type stuff. Someone, I think it was Martin Amis, said, all autobiographies are success stories. You see that all the time. How I rose from my humble background to be a rich and famous such and such. Well you don't get that here. This is Jean Paul's life before he ever did anything noteworthy. Astonishing level of honesty. I look at memoirs differently after this.

The Examined Life

Nearing age 60 and one of the most widely recognized writers and intellectuals of the 20th century, Jean-Paul Sartre decided in the early 1960's to sort out his early influences in the memoir THE WORDS. For anyone familiar only with the adult, his work and philosophy, this should be something of a surprise. Someone once told him that he seemed to be a person who never had parents. They might have well have said that he seemed like a person who was never a child. But he was, and a not unhappy one at that.

When Sartre's French naval officer father died very young, his mother, Anne Marie Schweitzer (cousin of Albert), took her baby home to her parents. In her parents' home, Anne Marie functioned more like Sartre's sister or playmate. Her father, Charles, was a stern academician who loved the child. For the first ten years of his life, Sartre did not know other children; the trio of adults was his world. The book, an extended essay really, is divided into two sections, "Reading" and "Writing." He taught himself to read early and at a young age began writing what he enjoyed reading: adventure books. Charles tried to turn off the adventure spigot and turn the child to writing about serious literature, which did not go over well. For the most part, Sartre portrays the life of a precocious boy who, by age 10, was beginning to get a sense of the tension between the past, present and future and the question of existence. Sartre concludes the book as his young self enters preadolescence, with a foot out in the world, in the society of other boys at school.

The voice of this book is surprisingly spritely, honest, 20th century modern and European. It comes out of a time when autobiography and memoir could be exercises in authentic learning, not mere navel-gazing.

Self-Creation

It is very understandable that Sartre's "The Words" is often compared to Rousseau's "Confessions". Both autobiographies seem to be brutally honest, striving to take away any romantic notions of the writers. Sartre's work however, focuses on the first ten years of his life. Sartre offers an extremely thorough psychoanalytical view of himself as a child and doesn't hesitate to apply Freud's notions of the Superego and the Oedipus complex onto himself. Sartre concludes that, lacking a father, he doesn't have a Superego or Oedipus complex, and this has made him into an extraordinary child who is able to actively create the image of himself and his identity, by using spoken, and later also written, words.

My impression of Sartre as a child is that of a clever, manipulative actor. As someone who was always trying to please the adults, and be admired by them, Sartre as a child came across to me as an annoying and spoiled kid, created by his circumstances and reading, but also a self-creating identity that writes. An example of this characterization in writing is a sentence in which Sartre proves how his virtuosity and views of equality are merely an act, befitting his view of human life as a ceremony: "I treat inferiors as equals: this is a pious lie which I tell them in order to make them happy and by which it is right and proper that they be taken in, up to a certain point" (p.33).

Like the case with Rousseau however, I did appreciate the author's honesty, but I also wonder whether this self-portrait in writing is another manipulative trick in order to create an image through words. After all, Sartre has left me with the impression of an incredibly intelligent child that knows how the world around him can be influenced and manipulated, but I can hardly imagine anyone thinking at this level at such a young age, and wonder if this autobiography is an attempt of the adult Sartre to re-create his identity through his childhood, literature and psychoanalysis. What I did love about this work is how Sartre explains his childhood and the world surrounding him through words and language, the books that he read as a child and the influence they had on his ideas. By doing this, Sartre emphasizes the idea that identities are indeed the products of an active creative process of using language and writing. Ultimately, this book explores and evaluates the whole use of books and language in human experience.
