Excelent and very personal lesson from Grisman

Imagine that you're in a small lesson room at your local music store. You're tuning up your mandolin waiting for your teacher to come in. The door opens and your teacher for today's lesson is David Grisman! That's the feeling I get when listening to and working with these CD's. It truely feels like you're sitting down one on one with the master and he's showing you his stuff.
Sure, it's David teaching you his own tunes, but there's more to it than that. He's also teaching you the reasons why he does what he does. He teaches harmoney leads on songs like "Dawg's Bull" but he also teaches why those harmony leads work and how to write your own.
One of my favorite sections is for the song "Minor Swing" where he discusses chord substitutions. This is just good basic jazz music theory presented in a meaningful way and applied to an actual song rather than just presented as a theory.
That brings up another point. The printed music is just the basics of the songs. When David talks about chord substitutions and so on you'll need to get out your notebook and write down what he's saying on the CD because many times it's not written in the book. But that's another reason why this feels like a private lesson. You'll have to listen, take notes, and practice to get the most out of this series, just like a real lesson.
So get out your instrument, tuner, metronome, notebook, and CD player. You're about to have about 6+ hours of intense mandolin lessons. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Fairly advanced lessons, not for beginners

I am learning mandolin after playing violin for many years; I can pick out a tune pretty easily but am not familiar with chords or mandolin technique. These CDs and the book contain a wealth of knowledge, but they are pretty advanced. There are discussions of double stops, slides, and different hand positions (first, second) within the first 10 minutes or so. Also, the previous reviewer is correct that you need to take copious notes. There are a lot of quick references to things like "third finger on the 8th fret, second finger on the third fret of the fourth string," etc., which are hard to process quickly. It would be wonderful if Dave Grisman could put together some simpler lessons! I am giving this four stars because of the wealth of knowledge contained in the CDs, but I would give it three stars for someone at my skill level, and less for rank beginners.

Good but not great

If you want to learn the THEORY of structural dynamics, this is not the best book to get. This book does not cover many of the derivations and mathematics that are behind structural dynamics; rather, it gives a brief presentation of the theory and goes directly into earthquake engineering applications. If you want to learn the core fundamentals and theory of structural dynamics, I would highly recommend J.L. Humar's textbook: "Dynamics of Structures." That being said, it IS an excellent textbook for earthquake engineering, and is probably most valuable for practicing structural engineers or for any earthquake engineering course.

Excellent book in dynamics

The organization and presentation is excellent. It is organized into two main parts: single degree of freedom systems(SDF) and multiple degree of freedom systems(MDF). An in-depth study of SDF systems comes first naturally since MDF systems can be viewed as solving multiple SDF systems. In terms of rigor, many proofs and derivations are provided. These are usually kept separate at the end of various sections within the chapters such that the reader would not get lost in the details. The problems are also wonderful in that they challenge the reader to think critically about the subject. In short, it is a great book for students exposed to dynamics for the first time.

I enjoyed this sweet short story with lots of neat, colorful pictures.
I recommend this ebook especially for the very young children;

As fairy tale as you can get -- wonderful for younger kids!

I like the mood of the story -- as if the author herself is reading the story to the listener. "Let me tell you a story about a small fairy named Angie...." Very relaxing. Angie the Fairy meets Goldie the Unicorn who has become lost, doesn't know where her family is. But Angie assures her they will come looking for her.

The illustration style is "very fairy" and suitable for this gentle tale. A very good book for little children who love gentle fairy tales.

great fairy tale

I love books. This book was a great read and once you get started, it really is hard to put down.The book is often witty. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This debut author has a promising future ahead of her. I know I am reading a good story when I can't wait to get back to it, over and over, reading much to long into the night. This is a great bedtime read with the grandchildren at night. We love to snuggle together and read fairy tales.

I would highly recommend this book to any friends or family looking to buy it. So I would for sure recommend to anyone in the general public to buy this book.

Interesting Variety, Doable, Inviting But Not Spectacular

This sampler (12 separate recipes total) was a pre-order from May and it just arrived. In looking through for layout, ease of reading and following along before delving into the recipes to see what's in store, the first thing noticed is that there is no Table of Contents, clickable or not. The "Look Inside" feature doesn't show one either, so here's the lineup: Red Velvet Macaroons, Chocolate Hazelnut Cake, Bollywood Cupcakes (Vegan), Chewy Ginger-Molasses Cookies (Vegan), Chocolate Decadent Bites, All-American Pear Cranberry Pot Pie, Cranberry Apple Syrup (goes with the pie), Flaky Walnut Cookies, Buttermilk Blueberry Cobbler, Oatmeal Cream Pies, Black & White Cookies, and Sporty Sugar Cookies.

What makes the absence of a clickable TOC annoying is that there are almost an equal number of ads and non-recipe pages as there are pages devoted to recipes: A picture of the chef's book precedes each chef's offering, followed by a short (usually 1-page) narrative, then two recipes (most but not all with pictures), ends with another ad, then the next cookbook cover ad, then that narrative, then finally two more recipes. Because this is a "sampler," expecting oodles of recipes is not realistic but, in the absence of a clickable TOC, needing to scroll or flip through all of the ads did not endear me to this sampler book overall.

The value, however, is in cooking from scratch, clear instructions -- Buddy Valastro's section is particularly rich with how-to instructions (if you've had problems with or never made frosted cookies, this is the section to read) -- brief but helpful tips and tricks, and an e-book taste of hardcover/physical cookbook quality. The recipes themselves are inviting, doable, don't require unusual ingredients, and the e-book delivers what the title promises: A sampler. Additionally, although I'm not Vegan, I was impressed that a section comes from Vegan Chef Chloe Coscarelli. The one recipe that caught my eye was Carla Hall's "All-American Cranberry Pot Pie" (and her Cranberry Apple Syrup). She doesn't include a dough or pie crust recipe so you'll have to find your own, but the ingredients appear to be a nice combination that offers something different. Thanksgiving weekend pot pies here we come, and I'll add leftover turkey to make it a meal rather than a dessert.

I'm torn between 3-4 stars, especially because margarine and canola oil are called for in some recipes and there are no nutritional breakdowns with any, but opted for four stars based on variety, clarity, and overall appeal of the sampler recipes chosen. For free, as indicated in the publisher blurb, definitely. If the price or offering changes in the coming months, then recommendation is 99-cents, yes; $1.99, maybe; anything higher would depend upon how much one is willing to pay for a recipe or two that catches the eye.

try the ginger cookies!

Holy crow! The ginger cookie recipe is the bomb! My mom made it for me. She put the dough in the fridge for about an hour after making it. It helped it to be easier to handle. They come out soft and chewy just how I like. We did however use I can't believe it's not butter instead of vegan butter. We also set the sticks out to come to room a little. Just might have yo buy that book the one came from. I'm also a type 2 diabetic and these did not hike my sugar up like regular cookies do and I eat like 3 at a time.

Not enough recipes

I only found one recipe I could use out of this book. When this book was first ordered it was delayed which is fine, but to be fair I don't remember it claiming only to be a sampler so that's my fault. So I did think I was getting more recipes. Some of them were just to hard to get into and I know how to cook and bake so I don't think some people could do these without some fear of doing them right. But that's just my opinion.

An enlightenment.

I find this book quite a read. I appreciate that this book has combined the Law of Attraction and the concept of Manifestation. It is profound. And what is even better is that the book has been made for beginners, like me. I have read some books about the Law of Attraction, but never really understood what it is or how it works. This book made things clearer. And another thing worth mentioning is that this book made it clear why some people are still failing in their attempt to use the Law of Attraction and what they might be doing wrong. Indeed, when you put all your best, the universe will conspire to make you achieve what you want. This book is an enlightenment.

I am interested in knowing the Secret of Success. This book is talking about that, so I did not think too much ,then I decide to buy it. I am glad I have done that. There are a lot of information I never thought before, and they are all useful and valuable to me. Now, I have practice the strategies in this book everyday and feel more confident than before. I believe I will succeed one day in the future.

How can I reject it?

This book offered readers the chance to get anything they want or wish for. Provided of course that they do what must be done and make sue of the Law of Attraction in the right way. I find this book an inspiring reading experience. Well, books about the Law of Attraction always are, but this book has given me something more. It has given so much encouragement on how one can try to manifest and use the Law of Attraction. And I think that everything is worth a try. The book even said that this "will FORCE the universe to give you the life of your dreams..." If this is the offer, how can I reject it?
