As the 1938 hurricane approaches Rhode Island, another storm brews in this novel from the author of The Secret Life of Violet Grant.
“Blends history, romance, and social commentary into...much more than a summer guilty pleasure” (Connecticut Post)

Memorial Day, 1938

Lily Dane has returned to Seaview, Rhode Island, where her family has summered for generations. It’s an escape not only from New York’s social scene but from a heartbreak that still haunts her. Here, among the seaside community that has embraced her since childhood, she finds comfort in the familiar rituals of summer.

But this summer is different. Budgie and Nick Greenwald—Lily’s former best friend and former fiancĂ©—have arrived, too, and Seaview’s elite are abuzz. Under Budgie’s glamorous influence, Lily is seduced into a complicated web of renewed friendship and dangerous longing.

As a cataclysmic hurricane churns north through the Atlantic, and uneasy secrets slowly reveal themselves, Lily and Nick must confront an emotional storm that will change their worlds forever…

From Booklist
Dashing football hero Nick Greenwald is catapulted into the rarified milieu of Park Avenue penthouses and Ivy League campuses in the uncertain days of the Great Depression when he falls in love with Lily Dane. The meeker (though more polished), moral, and beautiful best friend of Zeldaesque flapper Budgie Byrne, Lily is immediately smitten with Nick’s determination and strength, an attraction the manipulative Budgie doesn’t encourage, though she doesn’t necessarily discourage it, either. After all, Nick is Jewish, and Budgie is confident that Lily’s socially conservative family will never condone the match. They don’t, and Budgie profits from the rift, marrying Nick on the rebound, while Lily nurses her broken heart. Seven years later, the Greenwalds turn up at Seaview, Rhode Island, the perennial summer enclave for the Danes, Byrnes, and other WASP stalwarts, and their renewed presence in Lily’s life unleashes a storm of unexpected consequences. Williams’ sweeping saga of betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption trenchantly examines the often duplicitous nature of female friendships and family expectations. --Carol Haggas

A Hundred Summers: A Perfect Beach Read
By Tina Says
In 1931 two socialite college girls, Lily Dane and Budgie Byrne, attend college football games to watch Budgie's boyfriend play. Lily meets Nicholsen Greenwald at a game, and the two are instantly struck by each other. Their courtship is marred by the fact that Nick is Jewish, and when Lily attempts to introduce him to her parents they are adamant that Lily end the relationship.

Things have always seemed a bit easier for Budgie whose boyfriend, Harrison, is eventually cast aside for a different boyfriend, a pattern that repeats itself often in Budgie's life.

Now 1938, Lily is summering at Seaview, the beach house her family has vacationed at for generations. Budgie will be arriving shortly at her family's beach house, and Lily is nervous for her arrival since the two haven't spoken in years. In addition, Budgie is now Budgie Greenwald, having married Nick, who had once been the love of Lily's life.

The chapters alternate setting between 1931 and 1938 and I raced through each chapter in order to discover what occurred between Lily and Nick that ended what appeared to be a perfect love affair. As I read secrets were revealed - enjoyable especially since I didn't foresee any of them in advance. I fell in love with Nick, a gentleman from the book's beginning and wanted both he and Lily to find happiness.

The cover of this book perfectly captures this time period, which in addition to the 1930s setting, also is marked by the Hurricane of 1938 that swept away entire beach communities like Seaview where Lily and Budgie had summer homes.

A Hundred Summers left me with a book hangover; every title I have picked up since hasn't held much appeal.

Beach Read with a Hurricane Warning
By Ms Winston
Ever since I heard about the New England hurricane of 1938 I have been fascinated by it -- those of us who live along the East Coast today are thankful that the National Weather Service, the Hurricane Center, and the Weather Channel can keep us updated almost to the minute as to when a hurricane will strike. In 1938, folks were not so lucky. And into the literal hurricane comes Hurricane Budgie back into the life of our heroine Lily Dane, bringing with her Lily's former love, Nick Greenwald, now Budgie's husband.

The book alternates between 1931/2, when Budgie and Lily are great college friends, and Lily is in love with Nick, and 1938, when the September hurricane resolves many issues. There are secrets to be solved, and one of the biggest is why Nick left Lily, and how he ended up married to Budgie years later. We also need to resolve the issue of who is the mother of Kiki, five years old in May of 1938 -- is she Lily's sister or her daughter? Kiki is actually one of the weakest parts of this novel, as proof that the author, Beatriz Williams, cannot write realistic dialog for children. If you were not told that Kiki is not quite six years old in 1938, you would probably think she was an older teenager. At one point, Kiki says, speaking of herself: "Let the child have her fun," which is rather improbable dialog for a child not even in 1st grade. And it only gets worse later in the same chapter, when Kiki sees a man who is a stranger to her: "Well, hello. I haven't seen you around before." Anyone who is a parent or grandparent can recognize that most five year old children do not talk this way. And there is not really much to my mind that is terribly remarkable about Kiki that would make her sound that mature. To be fair, many writers cannot deliver realistic dialog for children, and tend to want to make them sound much older than their years.

Some readers were surprised that there was so much anti-Jewish sentiment in the United States in the time period that the novel is set, but those who know their political and social history are aware that it was an issue. Nick Greenwald has had to deal with this most of his life and that is why it is somewhat improbable that he got mixed up with Budgie. Now we would call Lily and Budgie "friendamies," that catch-all term to describe someone who is on the surface your friend, but, you discover, sometimes too late, that the person doesn't have your best interests at heart. Lily also has another "friendamie" that she is going to marry -- Yankee's pitcher Graham Pendleton, whom she also knew in college. Lily's Aunt Julie is a droll, if rather cliche, character of the crusty old aunt or grandmother or neighbor type who drinks a little too much but has the great big heart of gold. The climax of the novel is the hurricane, which is told in realistic and breathless terms. My overall feeling about this book is that it deals with vital issues of prejudice and betrayal, of fake vs real friends, of secrets that wound for years before they are finally resolved. For the most part, with the exception of the odd Kiki dialog, it is well-written and holds the interest of the reader.

Jerry Springer For The Elite (Contains Spoilers)
By Quirky Girl
Even if you add in "historic" events, a well-to-do family, racism, - this story, if told today, is nothing more than a Jerry Springer show.
Budgie is the well to do girl, who guys adore, who seems to have it all, including the man her best friend (Lily) loves. There is a switching of partners. And Budgie ends up with Lily's "one true love" and Lily becomes engaged to Budgie's old flame.
There is nothing about Budgie in the whole (almost 400 pages)to make the reader her like her one bit. And then, suddenly (SPOILER) - we learn in the last few pages, in a few sentences, that Budgie was molested by her father. It's just kind of thrown in there. Oh, by the way, here's why I've been a mean girl all my life. Then she gets swept away a hurricane. Wow, how convenient. Now Lily can finally marry the man of her dreams! And, even though Nick was married to Budgie - (SPOILER)he only had sex ONCE with her and that was prior to their marriage. Uh huh. Ok.
I read this book by the pool, and more than once someone asked me what was wrong because I had a scowl on my face. "This book is so freaking ridiculous!" Was always my answer. As least I got a good tan.
This book is NOTHING like Gossip Girl. At least with GG, the "mean" characters were somewhat empathetic. The only character that came close to being likeable was Nick - but that's not to say I ever came to like him.
Flat. Dull. And explanations thrown in at the very end like someone suddenly remembering to add salt to a stew - and by then, it's far too late.
Hated This.

Locke: His Philosophical Thought, by Nicholas Jolley

This book is a general introduction to the philosophy of John Locke, one of the most influential thinkers in modern times. Nicholas Jolley aims to show the fundamental unity of Locke's thought in his masterpiece, the Essay Concerning Human Understanding. In this work Locke advances a coherent theory of knowledge; as against Descartes he argues that knowledge is possible to the extent that it concerns essences which are constructions of the human mind.

Excellent survey of Locke's thought for its audience
By Jeremy Pierce
Nicholas Jolley has produced a great resource for students first encountering Locke or for those who are familiar with Locke but would like to get more into the details of his philosophical views. This book is intended as an introduction to his thought and is directed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It gives enough details to begin work on any of the diverse topics covered in it, with references to direct the reader elsewhere for further discussion. Unlike most books on Locke by philosophers, this one also includes his political theory and shows its relation to Locke's other views by tying together threads of his thought from one topic to the next. I thoroughly enjoyed working through it in a graduate seminar taught by the author, but I can see that it would be quite valuable just as a resource or as an accompaniment to someone's trying to approach Locke's thought in detail but without much background.

Addendum to my previously submitted review
By Jeremy Pierce
I neglected to mention one thing about this book. Jolley sees himself not just as a student of what Locke said but as if he is in philosophical interaction with Locke and his critics. He presents many common criticisms of Locke and responds to them. He also leaves Locke stranded in places where he really seems to have gotten himself into trouble. This book does a great job not just approaching the issues but also in trying to clarify them in the terms of contemporary philosophers and in defending Locke against the all-too-quick criticisms he often receives.

The Rise of Animals: Evolution and Diversification of the Kingdom Animalia, by Mikhail A. Fedonkin, James G. Gehling, Kathleen Grey, Guy M

Among the major events in evolutionary history, few rival in importance the appearance of animals. The Rise of Animals―a significant reference providing a comprehensive synthesis of the early radiation of the animal kingdom―fully captures this moment in geologic time.

Five of the world's leading paleontologists take us on a journey to the most important fossil sites that serve as unique windows to the earliest animal life―including the Ediacara Hills of Australia, the Russian taiga and tundra, the deserts of southwest Africa, and the rugged coasts of Newfoundland. Each of these places holds a rich fossil record that reveals how the animal form came into existence and why some groups succeeded while others failed. The authors describe the diversification of the Kingdom Animalia into the familiar body plans of today: from simple animals such as sponges to complex groups like mollusks, arthropods, echinoderms, and chordates that appear explosively in the Cambrian.

This exquisitely illustrated book reveals the early moments of an evolutionary process that eventually resulted in our own species. An essential resource for paleontologists, biologists, geologists, and teachers, The Rise of Animals is the best single reference on one of earth’s most significant events.

Review

It's a beautiful book and the definitive account of the period... I love it and expect it to become a classic.

(Jeff Hecht New Scientist)

The Rise of Animals offers a much-needed avenue to communicate to the general public the past decade's exciting discoveries of Ediacaran fossils.

(Shuhai Xiao Science)

It's a magnificent book, not only because it is unique, but also because it has been produced in a wonderful way with so many text figures, many of them in good colors. This gives a good picture of the appearance of the animals as well as of the environment in which they must have occurred.

(Rob Hengeveld, author of The Dynamics of Biological Invasions )

Recommended. Informed general readers; researchers/faculty; professionals/practitioners.

(Choice)

A one-stop shop for up-to-date information about this puzzling meagerie... non-professionals will likewise find that it is a fine-looking book that captures the excitement of scientific discovery.

(Gregory D. Edgecombe Bioscience)

Wonderful Treatise on Ediacaran Paleontology
By Ulrich
Since nobody else has reviewed this intriguing book yet, I thought I'd try to provide a brief description. The first thing to know is that this sumptuous volume is somewhat deceptively titled. The book is not really about the "rise of animals" per se, but rather focuses almost entirely on Ediacaran paleontology. There is relatively little content on subjects like phylogeny, genetic analysis, SSFs, the Cambrian explosion, etcetera, things you would ordinarily consider the heart of the "rise of animals." Instead you get a brief overview chapter that sets the geological/biological stage for Ediacaran biota, and then chapter after chapter of beautifully illustrated discussion of the various fossil sites, their contents, and the organisms they display. As reflected by the substantial price, the quality of the text and photos is superb.

In short, this book contains an extraordinary presentation on Ediacaran paleontology. It has no peers in that respect, or even serious competitors. If Ediacaran/vendian biota interests you, then this is the ONLY book out there. But if you are actually looking for a treatise on the emergence and diversification of animal life (as opposed to this fascinating sub-pocket of metazoans), I would instead recommend Valentine's incredible book on the origin of phyla.

Excellent content, evocative locations, honourable people!
By Amazon Customer
"The Rise of Animals" is a wonderful book. Much of the history of life on Earth was dominated by single-cell organisms and, until relatively recently, little was known of the origins of multi-cellular life before the "Cambrian Explosion" of life. This book describes those origins in what is now called the ediacaran fauna. More particularly, the most important fossil sites are very well described by leading palaeontologists

The authors show great respect for scientific rigor and academic balance - and dedication to their subject. They are also sufficiently humble to admit that much of what we know about the remote past is based on fragmentary evidence subject to different interpretations, and that new discoveries will almost certainly lead to revisions of matters currently considered to be settled.

You won't find self-serving selection of facts and argument to serve partisan stances. Nor will you find chest-beating self-promotion.

These are not light matters in an age where science is often trivialised and even distorted to serve partisan interests. One has only to follow the "intelligent design" controversy to see how pernicious such misrepresentation can be.

Where there are competing explanations for certain events, the central arguments on both sides are fairly given. Where uncertainty exists it is acknowledged. Significant information is fully attributed and referenced.

Such an approach fully informs the reader and provides valuable starting points for students to investigate particular matters more deeply.

The reader is also impressed by the dedication of early ediacaran investigators, who worked under difficult field conditions and then may have had to contend with professional opposition to their novel claims when back in the office! The progress of science owes much to such people, who, having the strength of their convictions, live to see their ideas embraced by their peers.

But this book is also about people other than palaeontologists. Often important sites lie on private property, or in remote areas, that require the cooperation of local people to enable palaeontologists to carry out field work. There is a moving story of one such couple, Tatiana and Timofei, who endured great hardships in the Soviet era, but who also provided accommodation and help to scientists in the field. Such people often go unrecognised in the scientific literature and it is greatly to the credit of the writers of this book that their contributions are recorded in text and photos.

There are also vivid descriptions of the difficulties (and pleasures) of doing fieldwork in remote locations such as the Arctic coast of Siberia.

The book is crammed with wonderful photos, illustrations and diagrams. The latter in particular are models of clarity. They manage to make very clear the essential features of complex systems. Colour-coded text boxes are frequently used for definitions and to describe important topics (eg radiometric dating) without disturbing the flow of the narrative.

Many of the fossil photos are breathtakingly beautiful. They are a tribute to the fossil discoverers, to those who revealed them from the host rock, and to those who prepared the illustrations for this book.

This book requires a reasonable level of scientific literacy to enjoy fully. The authors do not shy away from correct scientific terminology, but they make an effort to define many terms and to explain important topics in the text boxes.

Readers familiar with chemistry, biology and the earth sciences at senior high school or undergraduate level will have few problems.

Anyone studying palaeontology or related earth sciences would be motivated by the book, and would yearn to visit the wonderful locations of important fossils.

Science teachers looking to expand their horizons will also get much from the book, including insights into how science should be objectively studied and reported. Perhaps this is the most important duty of science teachers: to impart the moral and philosophical aspects of science, not only facts and techniques.

There is a text box on page 221 that describes the problems of sample contamination and the proper use of controls. Such experimental techniques should be taught to all students early in their careers, because the acquisition of trustworthy data is the bedrock upon which all science is built.

The book is not really suitable for general readers with no scientific knowledge at all - although such readers will certainly enjoy the illustrations and may be prompted to learn more about the origins of animals. The book is not amenable to skimming, as one reads a novel. Most non-specialist readers will have to engage with the text to take in the information.

There is no Glossary, which is a pity. Specialist terms unfamiliar to the general reader like "rangeomorphs" and "taphonomy" are used a number of times before they are defined in passing in the text. It would also have been helpful to include a classification diagram showing the major divisions of life (eg domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species) and some of the key taxa mentioned in the text. Only specialists will know where, for example, "chordate" or "arthropods" fit on the tree of life when these terms arise in the text.

Another small criticism is the rather jarring and self-serving Foreword written by Arthur C Clarke, whose promotion of his own science fiction books seems quite out of place after one has read the book.

There is an extensive bibliography, as you would expect in a book of this quality. There is also an "atlas" describing all the key fossils. Internet references are also given in some places.

The bottom line: I really enjoyed this book. It is well worth the money for general readers like myself, not only for its scientific content and descriptions of evocative places, but also for its insight into the professional activity of honourable people engaged in scientific work that they love and respect - in a field that unfortunately does not always generate the public acclaim or recognition enjoyed by high-profile fields such as space research and medicine.

Books like this deserve a wider readership so that proper recognition may accrue to scientists who are unravelling the mysteries of life on our planet - surely one of the noblest scientific endeavours of all.

misleading title, Strangely Organized
By Dennis R. Maccaskie
The title is Extremely Misleading. A much better title would be "Ediacaran Fossils and Their Localities". There's basically no discussion at all of the rise or evolution of animals, instead the book focuses on the major Ediacaran fossil localities. In fact, there's almost no discussion on what the individual Ediacaran critters are. What is the relation of Dickinsonia sp to any modern organism? (Yes, I KNOW there's no agreement, but what are the data and arguments?) Why should I have to read 3/4 of the book to discover that Dickinsonia sp is believed to have flopped onto microbial mats for lunch, over and over?

The organization of the book is Strange: it is organized by the localities in which the fossils were discovered. I really can't think of anyone who would prefer this organization over any other; it would make much more sense to me to organize the book by the history of discovery and interpretation, or to organize it by the various genera of fossils, or in fact, just about any way but the way it's been done.

The saving graces of the book are two. First, it is well illustrated. Second, there are several good anecdotes of the various geologists who performed the important field work.

In contrast to the rest of the book the first two chapters are in desperate, desperate need of an editor. They're full of typographic problems, unclear sentences, and other issues.

Recommended to Those Wanting to Apply Lean Techniques
By RKooiman
An industrial contractor once told me that he really liked the fact that companies were trying to apply Lean because he got a lot of work as a fallout of poor application.

It's amazing to me that companies will try to adopt state-of-the-art manufacturing concepts, such as Lean, without a good understanding of what they hope to accomplish or even why the concepts have become popular.

I think part of the reason is that there is not much useful, practical advice on how to do it.

This book goes a long way toward filling that void.

It is loaded with practical examples and exercises to clarify the application methods and benefits. It has some suggestions on getting started that can make you money almost immediately.

Chapters 2-5 provide a good overview (and there is a glossary for quick reference). Chapters 6-8 give a step-by-step procedure for getting started. Other chapters explain how to advance a process already in place and several chapters have excellent case examples. I especially liked chapter 18 where there is a simple experiment with dice to show the effect of variation on plant capacity.

I very much enjoyed reading this book because it helped me understand the principles and how to apply them. I was also impressed with how much the case studies reinforced the principles and tied them to real events. I recommend it to those who wish to implement lean in their facility.

Outstanding Practical Guide to Lean Manufacturing!
By William B.
If you have read "LEAN THINKING" by James P Womack and Daniel T. Jones, you may have been left wondering what Lean Manufacturing and the Toyota Production System was all about. It may have seemed mysterious and not well defined. Lonnie Wilson's "HOW TO IMPLEMENT LEAN MANUFACTURING" is a guidebook to Lean Manufacturing that will take the mystery out of process for you. It is a practical HOW-TO guide that can be used by plant managers, executives, quality managers and production personnel to implement the Lean Systems within their facilities.

This book not only addresses the strategy on how to implement Lean Manufacturing but also addresses cultural change necessary for a successful transformation. In the end you have to sustain the gain and the book tells you what is necessary.

What makes this book standout from other Lean texts is that the book itself is written in a Lean style of writing. Lonnie uses "Points of Clarity" to highlight important concepts within the book. Additionally he uses hundreds of visual graphics and tables that draw the reader's attention. Visual clues and organization is a key concept in Lean. I don't think you can turn two or more pages without being grabbed by a new visual to help make a point in the book.

I was impressed with the level of practical detail. Need to calculate OEE or the proper KANBAN size? Does Value Stream Mapping have you confused? The book provides the formula's necessary. It places these concepts in context to the big picture of efficiency, lead-time or cycle-time reduction. The book is filled with personal examples from Lonnie Wilson's career leading transformation efforts. Case studies are also given to drive home and follow the complete process of a successful Lean project and some that are not so successful.

This is a book I would personally recommend to anyone getting ready to attend a Lean training workshop. Read this book first and you will be prepared for your class. As a university instructor, I like to tell my students, "The answer is in the book". I think you will find many insightful answers about Lean in Lonnie Wilson's "HOW TO IMPLEMENT LEAN MANUFACTURING".

A practical approach to implementing lean manufacturing
By Craig Matteson
Lonnie Wilson teaches you how to implement the best aspects of lean manufacturing without having to implement the cultural aspects of the Toyota Production System. He believes that cultural transformation, while a benefit if you can pull it off, keeps you from realizing he benefits of Lean quickly, is risky, and adds cost to your Lean project.

Chapter 1 explains his views along these lines and Chapter 2 is a look at Toyota's System and why you need a manufacturing system that focuses on behavior more than culture. Chapter 3 shows you why variation gets in the way of your manufacturing goals and how inventory masks and is the result of variation. You want to eliminate inventory and you have to eliminate variation in order to eliminate the need for inventory. Chapter 5 shows you why Lead Time exists and how you can reduce it.

Chapter 6 discuses the basics of Cultural Change and how need to start thinking about Lean and your manufacturing culture. Chapter 7 looks at strategic approaches you can take to becoming a Lean Manufacturing environment and shows you what Takt is and how to use it. You also get a look at what a basic time study is and how to conduct a balancing study. Spaghetti Diagrams and Value Stream Mapping are also discussed.

Chapter 8 takes you through a Lean implementation process while chapter 9 looks at how to do Lean planning and how to set appropriate and achievable goals. Chapter 10 shows you how to maintain the gains you worked so hard to make and chapter 11 looks at the effect of your culture on Lean and how to think about what you can do with your own.

Chapters 12 and 13 deal with managing your constraints and the benefits you can realize by using cellular manufacturing. Chapter 14 is a case study on cultural change and chapter 15 is a case study on early gains realized by reducing lead times. Chapter 16 is three small case studies as good examples of what to do. Chapter 17 looks at what happens when Lean is used poorly. The last three chapters show you how to conduct your own experiments on variation and inventory, a bunch of assessment tools you can use, and a summary of how your company can become a house of Lean.

This is, I believe, a useful and practical book. Heaven knows, we need to become even more competitive to hold onto as many manufacturing jobs as we can. Maybe someday we can once again grow our manufacturing base. But if we ever do, it will be because we have become globally competitive not because of some series of spending initiatives out of Washington D.C..

So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. Such a sweet, well written story of despair and hope.Having just lost a husband less than a year ago, I can certainly relate to his sorrow and feelings of worthlessness - being old and useless. What a blessing this book as been to me.

A Book for everyone
By J. Johnson
There is a part of me that didn't think I needed to review A Man Called Ove because so many people have read it at this point, but I have talked to a few who have not, hence my desire to write this review.

I will admit that I am entirely on the Ove train!

The book is about a man, named Ove, who is the angry neighbor that we all seem to have. He complains about everything, has put up signs around his neighborhood with rules about what should and shouldn't be done, and feels there is a proper place for everything. He is not a friendly guy to say the least.

Into his life walks or rather drives a family who are to be his new neighbors. He doesn't bother to get to know their names and calls them the pregnant one and the lanky one. After an accident with the lanky one, Ove is forced to help this family, complaining the entire time.

Throughout the book Ove also speaks to his wife, complaining about the neighbors, the rule breakers, and how much he misses her (very minor spoiler). During interludes within the narrative, we read about how Ove became Ove. I will say by the end of the book, a bunch of dust was flying around the room and some got into my eyes.

The first thing to write is this book is funny. Ove is quite the character and how he treats people is hysterical. He just doesn't care what he says or how he says it. He simply wants order in his world and has lived that way for all of his life. The way he expresses himself becomes incredibly funny.

It is also a tragic story. Backman interweaves the two (funny and tragic) quite well and doesn't make it overly heartwarming. This could have easily become a book with the sentiment that we don't know people's past, so don't judge them, but it isn't. Ove is an ass in his past too and sometimes with reason. Backman keeps it level with just enough to make the reader fall for Ove.

The great thing is this is a book that pretty much anyone and everyone can (and will) enjoy. I recommended this one for book clubs and discussion groups. Grandmas will like this as well as middle aged men. Ove is simply a good book.

I gave this one 5 stars.

An amazing feel-good story
By Suncoast
This is a gem of a feel-good debut novel about A MAN CALLED OVE by Swedish author and blogger Fredrik Backman. It will make you laugh and make you cry and you will remember Ove for a long time.

Some would call Ove a curmudgeon, a lovely word meaning a bad-tempered, difficult, cantankerous person. His wife called him the most inflexible man in the world - he borders on being obsessive compulsive but is generally a grumpy man who doesn't tolerate fools and likes things to be done that way he wants them. While many think that he is just a rude and grumpy man, at heart you will find out that he is one of the kindest persons you will ever know.

Ove is a 59 years old widower who has just been arbitrarily retired after 30 years in the same job. His world now revolves around his home and neighbourhood housing complex where he rules the roost making sure that all local rules and regulations are followed. He is very lonely since his wife died, he quarrelled with his best friend and neighbour years ago and rarely has contact with his neighbours.

Ove's world is one of anger and sadness. One day a new neighbour accidentally flattens Ove's mailbox driving in an area where vehicles are prohibited. This starts a very amusing, heartwarming and frequently very sad story as Ove's rigidly structured world is disrupted by unexpected friendship from Parvaneh, a vivacious small and very pregnant Iranian woman who has moved in next door with her Swedish husband Patrick and two girls. Parvaneh is perhaps the only person who can take on Ove directly and win, and starts to change his life for the better.

We also go back to how Ove met his vivacious and loving wife Sonja who was the direct opposite of Ove. At a critical time in her life she said to him "We can busy ourselves with living or dying, Ove. We have to move on." Now a widower Ove is struggling to move on.

This is one of the best feel-good stories I have read for some time and it gets a place in my best books for 2014. I strongly recommend it to someone who wants to read something different that will hit at your heart. If you are emotionally affected by books I strongly suggest keeping a box of tissues handy.

My thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for a copy of this book for review.

Wish there had been more
By amypersian
Initially I was unsure about how I would like this book. Previously I had never read anything with this type of format. The most interesting part of this book was that they all included the line...."I never thought I'd see you again. Surprisingly when I finished reading the collection of short stories, I found myself wishing that there had been more contributors to this book. My favorite short story was the first one written by Allison Brennan. It illustrated a complicated father daughter relationship in an adventure format.

One of my favorite aspects was the mix of genres that were included. It keeps the reader interested and also exposes them to genres that they might not ordinarily read.

Would love to read another book like this with a different line. Kudos to the publishers, The Story Plant.

Well Worth Reading Collection of Short Stories!
By Evie
I Never Thought I'd See You Again, edited by Lou Aronica, is a collection of sixteen short stories by sixteen successful writers. In the introduction Mr. Aronica reveals that the title is actually a "writing prompt" that was presented to the writers and it is used in all the stories. Each author introduces their offering and I found these to be as interesting as the stories themselves. The subject content varies from story to story and include themes of what really matters in life and death.
In Facing the Mirror, by Dianne Despain, Maggie Holmes learns she has cancer while she is an Emergency Room. Her experience is almost surreal: The physician who gives her the diagnosis has more interest in getting to a party than comforting her patient. Then there is the oncologist who after ordering tests has not gotten back in touch with her with the results after seven weeks. The author's writing is direct and poignant. When reading this well written story the reader is one with Maggie Holmes.
Fabian's Wake by Laura Resnick opens with Eileen expressing surprise and shock when her deceased father leaves his coffin during his wake. It becomes clear that she is the only one to witness this and she is the only one who can hear him speak. There is a reason for these occurrences. With wit and engaging dialogue the author has crafted a marvelous story about regrets and family.
Solomon's Paradox, by Kelly McClymer, is a story I will never forget. Ben is responsible for his best friend's death. In this mesmerizing story, atonement is offered in the form of allowing the deceased friend to return from the dead and to live in Ben's body for one year. This is their haunting tale.
All the stories in this collection leave an impression and each is worth reading.
I received this book free of charge through NetGalley and I give this review of my own free will.

an interesting book that shouldn't be missed reading
By Infantina
I never thought I'd see you is a collection of prompt short stories that tempted me a lot into reading the book last week. Due to my large TBR list I had to postpone it for the time

being. I was very desperate to read this book as the title was very intriguing and also I love short stories. The advantage of reading short stories is that if one story is bad it doesn't mean all the other stories also have to be bad and you don't have to be disappointed by the whole book.

Since all the stories were written by different authors, I had no expectations, only curious to know what I would find in the next story. It was a pleasant surprise that all the stories were well written in a manner that inspired me a lot.I can not really point out which story I liked the most. There were stories which I hadn't anticipated it to end the way it did.

The first story had so much potential of becoming into a full length novel. I would have liked the story to continue. It was about a father and a daughter relationship. All the characters were well portrayed in this particular story.

Facing the mirror was a story which seemed as if it was real. It has succeeded in delivering the anxieties and real emotions of a cancer patient. After reading it, I had a feeling that a person who is diagnosed with cancer would react the same way as Maggie did. Janet Trotstad's Christmas Eve and Peresphone's granddaugter by Alyssa day was also my favorites.

In one particular story, I lost all my patience, so I flipped through the pages to find out the ending. It was Solomon's Paradox by Kelly Mcclymer. I didn't get this story right when I initially began reading it .I have to appreciate the author for writing this extraordinary story because I found this story to be very different and very likeable.

Overall, I would say this book was interesting to read. I enjoyed reading all the stories but only half of the stories made it to my most favorite list. I don't have anything to criticize about the other half but it's just that the stories weren't impressive as I thought it would be.(3.5)
