Amazing and Insightful

My daughter is now 20 and in college. I was a single father and raised her by myself, and I feel that this book is extremely insightful. I clearly recall Major changes in her during the 9th year. I remember one Fall afternoon taking a hike with her and she noticed the dead flowers and commented "Dad- the flowers were so pretty when they were born in the Spring and now they are gone- where are they and what happened to them?" my explanation to her was that even though the flowers had died, the roots (analogous to the soul) were alive beneath the soil and in the Spring will sprout new Life again I (Idea of Reincarnation) She was fascinated when I told her this. Many children at this age experience an "aloneness" and separateness from everyone else and begin to feel different and question many things. One night when lying on our backs and staring into the deepness of the universe, I asked her where she thinks we all come from. She pointed to the stars overhead! Amazing!

A real help in understanding our daughter.

We have noticed lately that our soon-to-be 9 year old daughter is changing. Her interests are changing, along with her reactions to some things. Through Waldorf, I had heard about "the nine year change". This book clearly explained what goes on with the nine year old. I liked that it used real-life conversations with parents that gave extremely detailed accounts of what their children were doing, then you have the teacher telling why the child is doing those things, and it made sense!

Good tool for conscious parenting

I've enjoyed reading this book because of the insight it has given me into Rudolf Steiner's view of the 9-year change in children. I believe he is correct with many of his ideas about the child's psychological development between ages 8-10.
The material can be a bit dense, I needed to read it several times and make notes so that I could understand it--plus it presents ideas I had not considered (which stretched this mommy-brain).
I found the first 2 chapters--the conversations with parents, to be the most accessible.
If you are looking to better understand your child on the brink of his/her 9th birthday and if you want to help them on their journey to happy, fulfilled adulthood, I think this is a good book to read.
It is in line with the "Waldorf" method of instruction.

You need this book

Brilliant! The book is exactly what it says it is and it is wonderful. I can't praise this book enough. As a consultant I experience a maintenance-language barrier every new organization I work with. There is a lot of time wasted getting up to speed and learning new local definitions. If we all came to one standard I believe many maintenance culture issues would simply fall away. I recommend this book for EVERY maintenance professional.

One of the Strangest Alien Abduction Stories

This is one of the strangest alien abduction stories I've ever read, and probably the most chilling. The Mojave Desert is home to the U.S. Military, and rumored vast underground bases and caverns that hold alien beings. Even ancient Indian geoglyphs indicate these beings have been here for thousands of years. Felber makes you experience the terror the Gifford's experienced in the desert by these creatures--it's a real page turner!

Mojave Incident - Challenge what you think you know

As a person of science and also a person of open thought, this book stays with you long after the pages have ended. The author does an excellent job of capturing the normality of the characters which sets the background for the believability of the story. The conclusion drawn by the "officials" is exactly as it should be (I wont ruin it for you). If you like to challenge common thoughts and question the actual humanity and history of man, this is a great read. Perhaps what is most thought provoking is that it is based on a real event, experienced by real people, who were not inclined to tell their story for profit or fame. Reading and understanding the emotions associated with the event and not just tangible details is a new experience in a UFO read for me. Well written and memorable - enjoy.

Fantastic Book!!!

The MOJAVE INCIDENT is a very thought provoking book. The author was really able to put you in the shoes of Elise and Tom and effectively conveyed the horror that they experienced in the desert. It really makes you think about the possibility of other "beings", and the possibility of other universes. A must read book that challenges our paradigms of the universe.

Mushroom Magic

A well written and easy to understand book which clearly defines each type of mushroom with illustrations and photographs (in the appendix). It shows how to identify and distinguish between poisonous and hallucinogenic mushrooms (a vital skill). It also gives details on habitat. A useful reference guide. The only extra bit of advice I would give those thinking of ingesting hallucinogenic mushrooms is to always keep a sample in case something goes wrong so they can easily be identified. If in doubt don't pick. This book will certainly help reduces the confusion between similar looking psychotropic and poisonous mushrooms.

Easily identifies the genus of the mushroom to help identification in further examination. A great, pocket size manual to show which mushrooms are worth picking and which are better left alone. Used with another guide that features expanded species and photographs this book is a neccesity for hunting.

About the Author
Hanne-Ruth Thompson received her PH.D. in Bengali at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London and her MA in Linguistics at Freiburg University, Germany. She has lived in Bangladesh and is author of Bengali: A Comprehensive Grammar (Rutledge 2010) and the forthcoming Bengali-English/English-Bengali Practical Dictionary (Hippocrene 2011). She teaches Bengali at SOAS and resides in England with her husband and three children.

I got it--It's great !!!

This is one of the best Bengali language books around. It serves everyone from casual travelers to people who really want to learn the language and may know quite a bit. The grammar section is the best I've ever seen: clear and concise. Vocabulary section is not huge, but basic 1,500 (or so) words clearly translated.

Another really excellent feature: Thompsons' system for English transliteration of Bengali letters is simple, direct and clear! Many otherwise excellent textbooks (Colloquial Bengali, for example) seem to compete with each other as to who can think up a more arcane transliteration scheme, as different as possible from other textbooks. It is a relief to use it, as small as it is. No disrespect to the other stalwarts in the field, Radice and Dimock, but definitely one of the top Bengali books.

I bought it because I like Bengali script and wanted a dictionary so see how words are written. In this case the accompaning script (or bengali words) is a bit small so sometimes it's a bit unclear but overall it's very complete word-wise. Good purchase.

Finally a useful Phrasebook!

I have been trying for many years to learn Bengali and finally this little book seems to have a lot going for it! The size is perfect for carrying. Both dictionaries from English to Bengali and Bengali to English are very easy to read and navigate AND uses the Bengali script, not just a transcription. It is complete with alphabet and pronunciation, phrases that are actually useful and my favorite...a small, but very useful grammar overview! Overall an easy to read, useful little book!

More compassion please

As a 39 year old guy who quite consciously side-stepped "guyland" throughout my life I appreciated the thorough outline of what a lot of white middle-class guys go through in high school, college and beyond. I always walked by certain bars with the young binge drinkers Kimmel talks of and wondered what they hell they were up to.

What I don't appreciate is the shaming tone of the writing and the antiquated definition of a grown man. Marriage and children are not the only barometers for maturity. And as much as the bullies need to be held responsible for the violence they cause, "guys" including said bullies also need more real-life, healthy role-models and real compassion. The violence that erupts in boys most likely has very long roots. Think about it. Most boys are steered clear out of their feeling at about age 5 with the classic statement, "big boys don't cry!" and goes on from there. Factor in that boys receive less quality attention in general than their girl counterparts and the messages in popular culture and it's no surprise they're acting out.

I was also very disappointed that a little less than one-fifth of the book towards the end was dedicated to solutions. I've also got to believe that there are more stories of kids, like myself, who have led great alternative lives to "guyland" and who've never set foot on a sports team or a fraternity. I tried a number of times to enter these social groups in high school and college and simply found that their company was just not very entertaining.

My one small solution for helping guys in guyland and mankind in general is attending Men's Groups in the style of Robert Bly. I discovered my Men's Group in college in 1991 and have been attending them ever since. It's amazing what kind of support, learning, and healing can happen when few men meet twice a month to just talk about what's going on in their lives. In these groups I've met men who became the role models I'd longed for in my youth. In these groups I exorcised the many fears I had about wether I was "man" enough.

Principal among them was the desire to have more platonic affection with men, ie hugs. It took me a few years of groups to really let go of both the shame of desiring the warm embraces and fully letting in the pleasure it brought me. (For the record I am heterosexual)

As a full grown adult I hope to bring this compassionate awareness to other young men and let them know that being a man is a whole lot more than being successful with money and women and avoiding acting "gay." Hopefully someone can write that book.

Mixed Reviews Suggest Something!

It doesn't surprise me that some are going to rip this book to shreds. I don't read to agree with everything the author has to say. I read books like this to push myself to learn, react and discuss with others. I judge books on their ability to make me think about a topic. I also recognize that when an author tries to take on a topic like this there is NO way they are going to cover everything... the book would be 1000's of pages long if they did.

A few of my observations are listed below:

1. As a social-science researcher I, too, wish that Kimmel would have been more specific in detailing his methodology. Those criticizing his research design, lack of comments about about Human Subjects committees, etc, could make the same claim for MANY other research-based books that don't want to bore the average reader this information. It is quite common for those conducting sociological research in more unexplored areas to use qualitative designs - those that just provide observations on a particular group of people. This doesn't make them unscientific, however we should be careful not to generalize these findings to all groups of young men. Kimmel does state early on that most of his observations were about young white middle-class men. Some readers and social-science researchers might like to know a little more about what he actually did. The book in many ways is a phenomenological study that has some limitations, but also much to consider. The "mapping" he has produced is a good starting point for further research.

2. Although this book might describe the majority of white young men, there was little noted about the exceptions to the problems. There are young men out there who live differently...who aren't getting drunk every weekend, hooking up with a different sorority girl each weeknight, or playing video games until 4 in the morning. How do we explain what's going on with them? Probably beyond the scope of the book but readers shouldn't give up complete hope on young men...there are some who are making different choices than those described in the book.

3. Some may criticize the fact that the book lacked Solutions. However, I don't think this was the intent of Kimmel's book. Actually, I would have been disappointed if Kimmel's last chapter was something to the effect of - "Kimmel's 10 steps to better manhood." This is a complex sociological, psychological, economic, educational, family, and dare I suggest, spiritual problem. Solutions won't come from one man or woman, but rather groups of interested parties who are willing to put their jobs and reputations on the line to push for changes in how we interact with boys and young men.

As a 30-something guy who has experienced much of what Kimmel wrote about, I found the book a little spooky. Were his observations about today's young men or did he pull out some data from the years I was in college? At moments, I wondered if Kimmel was writing about my experiences as a fraternity member and college athlete in the early 90's. His observations are not just about today's generation... much of this has been happening for decades. However, the "conspiracy of silence" Kimmel talks has kept many men in the closet about what we experienced or in denial... defensive and pissed off when someone attempts to provide a different understanding of the experience.

Potential readers should be warned. If you think everything is great in Guyland - that American young men are in perfect shape (emotionally, spiritually and physically) with no need to change and you aren't open to reading about patterns of behavior, that are troubling in the least, then don't bother reading this book.

However, if you're like me, someone who's trying to make sense of the young men in your lives - personally or professionally - then this is a must read. More importantly, I think this is a book that people should read with their spouses, colleagues and in the classroom as a way to promote discussion on a very important topic.

Badly Written and Disappointing

The sociological survey of the adolescent male adult "Guyland" actually starts strong and interesting. Sociologist Michael Kimmel promises to explore why the white middle-class male has decided to abandon the usual adult responsibilities of getting a job, marrying, and raising a family. In Kimmel's approximation, male adolescence spans roughly from age 12 (nutrition, health, and sanitation mean that the onslaught of puberty is earlier and deadlier) until the mid-thirties (when somehow the white middle-class male outgrows living at home, roaming from dead-end job to dead-end job, and harboring wild impossible fantasies, and slouches into being a responsible family man). This would have been an endlessly fascinating study, but Mr. Kimmel unfortunately fails to deliver, and instead offers a litany of the sins, disappointments, and grievances of the white middle-class male: too much sports, too much hazing, too much pornography, too much anger and violence, too much video-games. Why can't men grow up, and accept their emotional complexity as human beings and reach out to all humanity?

This is all established psycho-babble thanks to "Real Boys" and "Raising Cain" and "Reviving Ophelia" (trendsetters that all are mentioned in this work), but Mr. Kimmel takes us from the merely melodramatic to the outrageously insane: to defeat the culture of entitlement (it is true that white middle-class males are all incredibly spoiled), the culture of silence (no one likes a rat, right?), and the culture of protection (is society too tolerant of the misbehavior of males?) that help to spawn the nefarious bleak world that is Guyland, Mr. Kimmel proposes massive school, family, and government intervention. Mr. Kimmel accepts that a large part of urban youth cynicism has to deal with the flagrant irresponsibility and crass greed of America's political and financial elite, and so why would he argue that much of the answer is giving more power to authority figures to dictate how our youth think and behave? The thinking in "Guyland" is just as contorted and confused as the writing.

About the Author

David K. Hayes, Ph.D. has over 35 years of experience in the field of hospitality management and education. Dr. Hayes initiated the hospitality management program at Texas Tech University. He has held faculty positions at Purdue University and the University of Houston’s Conrad Hilton College of Hotel Administration; as well as the position of Vice President of the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). In 2005, Dr. Hayes formed Panda Professionals Hospitality Management and Training, (www.pandapros.com); a training resources company that develops customized hospitality education-related computer simulations, print publications, and seminars. Dr. Hayes is a prolific author, having published over a dozen textbooks, including versions translated into Chinese, Portuguese, Croatian and Spanish. In addition to his Ph.D., Dr. Hayes earned the hospitality industry certification of Food Management Professional (FMP) from the National Restaurant Association (NRA) where he has served as a consultant on the ManageFirst program. He also has earned the Certified Food and Beverage Executive (CFBE) and Certified Hospitality Administrator (CHA) designations from the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Dr. Hayes received his Bachelor of Science (BS), and Masters of Science (MS), degrees in Hospitality Management and his Ph.D. degree in Educational Administration from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

 

Dr. Jack Ninemeier is a professor emeritus in TheSchool of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University.  His Ph.D. is from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  He holds Master of Science and undergraduate degrees from, respectively, Iowa State University and Southern Illinois University.  His experience includes more than thirty years of university teaching at Michigan State University and the University of New Orleans, seven years of service as a state-level administrator of a feeding program serving in excess of 350,000 meals daily, and four years of experience in various positions in commercial foodservice operations.  Additionally, he was a Research Consultant for the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association for twelve years.  Dr. Ninemeier is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of seventy-three books relating to various aspects of foodservice and healthcare management, and he has written numerous articles involving these and related areas.

 

Allisha A. Miller is a hospitality industry professional specializing in the development of educational and training materials targeting today’s technology savvy student. About the Author
Edward Sazonov is an Associate Professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL, USA and the head of the Computer Laboratory of Ambient and Wearable Systems (http://claws.eng.ua.edu). Wearable devices developed in his laboratory include an accurate physical activity and gait monitor integrated into a shoe insole (SmartStep); a wearable sensor for objective detection and characterization of food intake (AIM); a wearable sensor system for monitoring of cigarette smoking (PACT); sensor systems for early diagnosis of risk of falling in elderly (ALARM) and others. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, National Academies of Science, as well as by state agencies and private industry.

Michael R. Neuman joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Michigan Technological University in 2003, as Professor and Chairman, the latter ending in 2010. Previously he held the Herbert Herff Chair of Excellence at the Memphis Joint Program in Biomedical Engineering. He served for thirty-two years on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Reproductive Biology and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Neuman was Editor in Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering from 1989 through 1996. He also edited Physiological Measurement from 2002 through 2007 and served as Editor in Chief of the biomedical engineering magazine, IEEE Pulse from 2008 through 2013. Dr Neuman’s research has been in the area of biomedical sensors and instrumentation with emphasis on clinical applications.
